With the costs of commuting skyrocketing it’s understandable that the work from home trend is on the rise. There are over 4.2 million Americans who refer to their house as both a home and an office. An article about the politics of working from home that ran in the NY Times last November noted that, “the federal government says nearly a third of workers qualify as ‘independent,’ a category that includes self-employed professionals, contractors and part-time and temporary workers.” The same article comments on the cities with the highest percentages of a work from home population- Seattle, home of SOHO Wife, being third on the list.
When looking at the statistics provided by the US Census Bureau, the concept of working from home is relatively new and has been steadily increasing since the 1960’s. In the coming years we will be able to see how this trend affects productivity along with many other pros and cons that come along with handling professional relationships over the phone and email along with completing tasks while the kids are home.
