Take Your Daughters- and Sons- To Work Day

by SOHOWife on April 23, 2009

Today is Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work day. The program originally began in 1993 as “Take Our Daughters to Work” by the Ms. Foundation for Women. The Ms. Foundation for women began as a way to gain exposure and funding for the women’s movement in the early 70’s. In 2003 the program incorporated sons into the mix making it their mission to “empower girls and boys in all sectors of society to confront and overcome societal messages about youth so that they may reach their full potential and live fulfilling lives.” The program encourages adults in the workforce to invite their children, children of relatives, or youth in the area to discover new possibilities for their future, affirm the idea that they can achieve anything with hard work and determination, and provide them with a positive adult figure in their lives.

I love the Office clip from above; I am assuming this is not what the women at Ms. Foundation had in mind when they thought encouraging daughters to join their parents, or in Kevin’s case her mom’s Fiance, at work. Today young girls have the opportunity to see how many possibilities are out there for them. Women are now prominent figures in state and national politics, they are international ambassadors, they had large national corporations, some are even able to work from home and take care of their children at the same time. The images that come to mind the most in terms of women in the workforce from my childhood are from movies. The movies I remember watching when I was in my preteens that come to mind were “Working Girl,”"Straight Talk,”even “G.I Jane” . They were movies where women started out at the bottom and overcame great odds to take charge. They were empowering, no matter how silly they were.
