Do Girls Really Just Want to Have Fun?

by SOHOWife on November 25, 2009

More so than not, I think that while many women may think “we just wanna have fun,” we in actuality do everything in our power to undermine that.

Growing up I loved the movie Girls Just Wanna Have Fun; I made all of my friends watch it, I knew the dances, and all of the words to the songs in it. If you have not seen it, you must go our and rent it. A young Sarah Jessica Parker with her friend played by Helen Hunt run around Chicago entering in a dance competition to escape the expectations and rules put upon them by their parents and society to have fun and follow their dreams.

While many women rebelled against expectations and rules as girls in order to get or do what we wanted, we now not only follow what is expected of us, but enable and form new rules for ourselves and others to follow. This provides us with excuses for why we aren’t doing what we want, what is fun for us, and what are real vision for our life is. It could be as small as not going out for a glass of wine with a friend on a Tuesday night, because you would have to leave the kids with your husband, or you have work in the morning, etc.

Stop sabotaging you.

I recognize we all of responsibilities: kids, husband, mortgage payment, etc. I want to put more fun in my 2010 without harming my family and well being. To do so I won’t be abandoning the business and traveling the world, but breaking little rules I have set up for myself.

Here’s to examining which rules and expectations you have set up for yourself that you can break in 2010 to increase the fun factor in your life.
