Last year I wrote (not very elequently) on the history of Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, including a clip from the sitcom The Office. In the clip the character Kevin shows his fiance’s daughter around his cubicle. Like Kevin in the clip, the entire episode is a mix of activities that have little to no relevance in inspiring the kids.
What does the foundation want us to teach kids on this day? Through a “hands-on and interactive environment” they want us to…
- Show “them the value of their education”
- Help “them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life”
- Provide “them an opportunity to share how they envision the future and begin steps toward their end goals”
As a SOHO entrepreneur, what will you be incorporating in your child’s Take your Daughters and Sons to Work day experience?
This is a great time to be shouting from the rooftops about your business and how you are able to operate it, showing kids and especially the next generation of college graduates that anything is possible. I meet so many women that explain that they didn’t even realize that being in business for yourself doing x was even a possibility until they were in their mid thirties, sometimes even forties.
Consider your part in the day to be in creating awareness for the possibility of owning a SOHO business. Write a blog post, post something on your Facebook profile, or connect with your local high school and let them know about you and your unconventional career path and that it is a possibility for their future.
Consider writing about…
How did you get to where you are? What do you wish you would have done differently? What steps should youth today be taking to reach their future goals?
