Redecorating my Home Office

This weekend I was staying at a hotel on the Eastside that provided one of my favorite magazines in our room, 425, a local lifestyle magazine that features restaurants, boutiques, and other stories from my local area. This was particularly fun for me this time in opening it, because I have a short blurb in there as a member of their ‘Reader Advisory Board.’ Taking some time to read through the articles there was one in particular that I absolutely loved titled “Creating your Home Office: from pencils to paint- planning is key.”

For the last three months, since Mr. Donogh has gone into business for himself and is now sharing my home office more than usual with me, I have wanted to redecorate my office. Actually, its more like decorate period.

I never painted the walls after moving in September of 2008 and simply moved what we had from our other house into this new space. To give myself some credit (more like my husband), we did take some time to paint the two desks; one black and one a deep brown. I hung a few frames and added a couple lamps and my office still looks “blah.”

In this particular article they emphasize, like it says in the title, that you need to plan before even beginning to move things around or add items. Some things to think about include how you will be using the space for work and interacting, measurements, and looking for visual inspiration online.

While I am preparing for baby boy Donogh in finalizing systems for Ovaleye, in completing some of the decorating downstairs, and of course getting his nursery ready, I’ve also decided to add the office to my list. In addition to the article’s suggestions for preparing to create your home office space I will be:

  1. Literally writing down specifics on my personal brand and my husband’s as a place to start from.
  2. Collecting images online like they suggest, and then creating inspiration boards with color swatches and other items I want to include.
  3. Finding new filing and other organizational systems that take into account my husband’s presence in the office.
